Eat Like a Locavore

Up for the Locavore challenge? Try it for a month, a season, or in moderation. Here are a few suggestions to help:

Check out what is available from your local community supported agriculture (CSA) farm. It’s a way for you to support a local farm and receive a weekly seasonal basket of produce. Search by zip code for contact information, pick up locations, and price.

Try local farm markets and discover what is available. Our suggestion – go early for the best selection. In the DC area, sign up for FRESHFARM Markets' E-News for updates on events and farmers. Some of our favorites are:

Blue Ridge Dairy and FireFly Farms – award-winning cheese and yogurt
EcoFriendly – currently selling delicious lamb shanks
Cedarbrook Farm – great selection of pork products
Pot Pie Farm – chicken and eggs

Ideas for substitutions: Instead of using balsamic vinegar use a local cider vinegar. In place of sugar try maple syrup or honey found at the farm market.

Local farmers markets

I miss the farmers stands at the now defunct Georgetown Flea Market. Are there any other places in Northwest other than Dupont Circle market that you know of? Will the stands on Wisconsin Avenue just south of Tenley Circle be back this summer on Saturdays? They would have to Metro accessible; I do not drive.
